                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     congratulate Erle Nye on being named a recipient of The American
 1-3     Jewish Committee's 1999 Institute of Human Relations Award; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, This prestigious award is being presented to Mr. Nye
 1-5     in recognition of his leadership, civic achievement, and
 1-6     exceptional work in preserving America's democratic heritage; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Mr. Nye is chairman of the board and chief executive
 1-8     of Texas Utilities Company and its principal subsidiary, TU
 1-9     Electric; he also holds those positions with Texas Utilities Fuel
1-10     Company, Texas Utilities Mining Company, TU Services, Texas
1-11     Utilities Properties, Inc., and Texas Utilities Communications,
1-12     Inc.; and
1-13           WHEREAS, His professional responsibilities include serving as
1-14     chairman of Texas Utilities Australia Pty. Ltd. and serving as
1-15     chairman of the board of Basic Resources, Inc., Chaco Energy
1-16     Company, and Communications Holdings 1, Inc.; his distinguished
1-17     career has been enhanced by his expertise in the areas of
1-18     engineering, finance, law, and regulation; and
1-19           WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman attended Texas A&M
1-20     University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in
1-21     electrical engineering; continuing his pursuit of academic
1-22     excellence at Southern Methodist University, he earned a law
1-23     degree; he is a registered professional engineer and a member of
1-24     the American Bar Association as well as local and state bar
 2-1     associations; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Deeply respected for his leadership ability, Mr. Nye
 2-3     shares his time and energy with many worthy local and national
 2-4     organizations: he serves on the boards of The Dallas Foundation,
 2-5     The Nature Conservancy of Texas, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and
 2-6     The Science Place; in addition, he participates with the Dallas
 2-7     Committee on Foreign Relations, the Salvation Army's Dallas County
 2-8     Advisory Board, and the Dallas Together Forum, which he cochairs;
 2-9     and
2-10           WHEREAS, Governor Bush appointed Mr. Nye to The Texas A&M
2-11     University System Board of Regents in 1997; he currently chairs the
2-12     Committee on Finance, is a member of the Committee on Academic and
2-13     Student Affairs, the Legislative Committee, and the Transportation
2-14     Committee, and also is special liaison to the Texas Growth Board;
2-15     and
2-16           WHEREAS, Mr. Nye's admirable civic involvement includes
2-17     participation with the Texas A&M Development Foundation Advisory
2-18     Committee, The Chancellor's 21st Century Council, and the
2-19     Development Council of The University of Texas at Dallas; he is
2-20     past chair of the Texas A&M University College of Engineering
2-21     External Advisory and Development Council and the Baylor College of
2-22     Dentistry Board; and
2-23           WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Mr. Nye and his wife, Alice,
2-24     enjoy a close-knit family of five children and five grandchildren;
2-25     and
2-26           WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Erle Nye has aspired to the
2-27     highest level of professionalism and accomplishment, and his
 3-1     significant efforts in behalf of his fellow citizens are truly
 3-2     exemplary; now, therefore, be it
 3-3           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 3-4     Legislature hereby congratulate Erle Nye on his receipt of The
 3-5     American Jewish Committee's 1999 Institute of Human Relations Award
 3-6     and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and
 3-7     happiness; and, be it further
 3-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-9     prepared for Mr. Nye as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3-10     House of Representatives.
