R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On April 14, 1999, a group of high school community 1-2 leaders from the Empowering Teen Leaders program will be in Austin 1-3 to observe the legislature in session; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Established under The Leadership Center, a program 1-5 in cooperation with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service of the 1-6 Texas A&M University System, Empowering Teen Leaders educates high 1-7 school students and mentors on leadership development, coalition 1-8 building and communication; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Empowering Teen Leaders classes have worked to 1-10 improve the quality of life of young people and their families 1-11 through serving as leaders in their communities; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Since 1992, over 350 students have gone through the 1-13 Empowering Teen Leaders program, developing essential leadership 1-14 skills to take into their surrounding communities and make a 1-15 positive difference in the lives of their peers and those who will 1-16 hopefully one day follow in their footsteps; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Those students have themselves recruited more than 1-18 2,000 peer volunteers who have provided over 30,000 hours of 1-19 volunteer work, reaching almost 38,000 people in Harris County; and 1-20 WHEREAS, These young leaders contribute a much needed 1-21 positive influence in urban areas to steer kids away from drugs and 2-1 gangs, and toward literacy, community involvement, and respect for 2-2 others; now, therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the Texas House of Representatives of the 76th 2-4 Legislature hereby welcome these special young people to Austin and 2-5 congratulate Empowering Teen Leaders participants for all their 2-6 hard work and success; and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-8 prepared for the Harris County Extension Office as an expression of 2-9 high regard from the Texas House of Representatives.
