R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Hal Flanders of Alpine has been chosen to receive 1-2 the 1998 Texas Environmental Excellence Award and this prestigious 1-3 honor is truly well deserved; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation 1-5 Commission, the Environmental Excellence Award is part of the Clean 1-6 Texas 2000 Program and is given to those individuals and 1-7 organizations that have made significant contributions to waste 1-8 reduction and pollution prevention; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Flanders founded Alpine Recyclers, Inc., the 1-10 community's first such service, in the early 1990s; initially, the 1-11 fledgling operation handled only aluminum cans and glass, but as 1-12 the business grew it took in a variety of other products such as 1-13 cardboard, steel cans, and scrap metal; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Under his expert guidance, the company expanded its 1-15 service area to include the cities of Marfa, Marathon, and Fort 1-16 Davis, and in 1995 Mr. Flanders realized his initial goal when the 1-17 City of Alpine took over the management of the program he had made 1-18 so successful; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Recycling is a significant aspect of protecting our 1-20 state's valuable environmental resources and Hal Flanders' 1-21 meaningful contributions to this vital initiative are indeed worthy 1-22 of special legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be 1-23 it 1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-1 Legislature hereby congratulate Hal Flanders on winning the 1998 2-2 Texas Environmental Excellence Award; and, be it further 2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-4 prepared for Mr. Flanders as an expression of high regard by the 2-5 Texas House of Representatives.
