R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Solomon P. Ortiz Intermediate School in Robstown has
 1-2     provided exemplary service to the children of our state and is
 1-3     indeed worthy of recognition on this day, April 20, 1999, as
 1-4     members of the school's executive board and student council, as
 1-5     well as several school sponsors, gather at the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Established in 1988 as Robstown Middle School, this
 1-7     fine campus was formed to accommodate the district's fifth and
 1-8     sixth grade students; the first administration included Principal
 1-9     Adan Botello, Assistant Principal Hugo Munoz, and school
1-10     facilitator Ester Figueroa; and
1-11           WHEREAS, By unanimous community vote in 1992, the school was
1-12     renamed Solomon P. Ortiz Intermediate School in honor of Robstown
1-13     native and United States Congressman Solomon P.  Ortiz, and through
1-14     the guidance of new administrators, the school continued to achieve
1-15     its goal of meeting the educational needs of all enrolled students;
1-16     and
1-17           WHEREAS, The present administration includes Principal
1-18     Eulogia De La Cruz, Assistant Principal Joe Chapa, and school
1-19     facilitator Mary Alvarado, and their hard work and dedication have
1-20     upheld the school's tradition of excellence; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Compelling proof of the advances made by this school
1-22     can be seen in its 1998 Texas Assessment of Academic Skills test
1-23     scores, which have risen to 84 percent in reading and 86 percent in
1-24     math for the fifth grade, and 87 percent in reading and math for
 2-1     the sixth grade; this accomplishment earned Solomon P. Ortiz
 2-2     Intermediate School an award of recognition from the Texas
 2-3     Education Agency in that year; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, The dedicated teaching staff of Solomon P. Ortiz
 2-5     Intermediate School has created an environment that promotes
 2-6     success and provides students with a quality education, and their
 2-7     unwavering commitment will continue to play a vital role in
 2-8     preparing the students of this community for leadership roles well
 2-9     into the coming century; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby honor the faculty, staff, and students of
2-12     Solomon P. Ortiz Intermediate School and welcome those individuals
2-13     who have traveled to Austin; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15     prepared for Solomon P. Ortiz Intermediate School as an expression
2-16     of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
