R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride 1-2 in joining the Texas Association of Counties in recognizing April 1-3 20, 1999, as County Government Day at the Capitol; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The week of April 18-24, 1999, is being observed by 1-5 the National Association of Counties as National County Government 1-6 Week to provide the nation's citizens with an opportunity to honor 1-7 the many contributions made by county governments; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The oldest form of local government in the United 1-9 States, county government addresses many critical issues, including 1-10 environmental protection, indigent health care, special assistance 1-11 for the elderly, job training, and public safety; and 1-12 WHEREAS, There are 254 counties in Texas, and those dedicated 1-13 individuals who serve our counties as elected or appointed 1-14 officials not only work diligently to meet the needs of citizens 1-15 without placing an undue burden on taxpayers but also commit 1-16 themselves to finding solutions to problems that will benefit all 1-17 Texans; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Counties encourages 1-19 citizens across the state to observe National County Government 1-20 Week by learning more about this vital form of local government and 1-21 the many ways in which it serves the public; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-23 Legislature hereby commend the county officials of this state for 1-24 their countless contributions to Texas and welcome members of the 2-1 Texas Association of Counties to the State Capitol; and, be it 2-2 further 2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-4 prepared for the Texas Association of Counties as an expression of 2-5 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
