No. 695 76R12532 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On February 26, 1999, Joe Barry was inducted into 1-2 the United States Polo Association Hall of Fame and Museum, and 1-3 this outstanding honor is indeed worthy of special recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A lifelong Texan, Mr. Barry was raised on a ranch 1-5 and grew up playing polo and training polo ponies; initially intent 1-6 on becoming a rancher, he earned a bachelor of science degree from 1-7 West Texas State University and a master's degree in animal 1-8 nutrition from New Mexico State University, but his beloved pastime 1-9 of polo would eventually become his profession; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The son of polo legend Harold Barry, who is also a 1-11 member of the hall of fame, Joe Barry was renowned as a booming 1-12 long-ball hitter with incredible accuracy, and during his lengthy 1-13 and storied career he garnered many of his sport's most significant 1-14 accolades; and 1-15 WHEREAS, In addition to twice playing on the U.S.A. squad in 1-16 the Cup of the Americas, Mr. Barry won six U.S. Open Championships, 1-17 three Gold Cups, three Silver Cups, two Butler Handicaps, and two 1-18 North American titles, as well as being chosen MVP in the 1976 1-19 World Cup Match, during which he rated an impressive nine goals; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, He currently lives in Marion with his wife of 28 1-22 years, Sharon, and their son, Joe Wayne, who is also a professional 1-23 polo player; Mr. Barry shares his considerable expertise as coach 1-24 for the Isla Carroll polo team in Houston, and his exemplary work 2-1 with that organization recently earned him Coach of the Year honors 2-2 from Polo Magazine; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Joe Barry has distinguished himself as a polo player 2-4 and coach of supreme ability, and on this day, April 22, 1999, it 2-5 is truly fitting that we recognize him for his achievements; now, 2-6 therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby congratulate Joe Barry on his induction into the 2-9 United States Polo Association Hall of Fame and Museum and extend 2-10 to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; 2-11 and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-13 prepared for Mr. Barry as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-14 House of Representatives.
