R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
 1-2     in recognizing Carl Rice Embrey of San Antonio, as he has been
 1-3     named the 1998-1999 Texas State Artist in two-dimensional media;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Mr. Embrey's affecting and emotional paintings draw
 1-6     heavily from his memory of the land surrounding his boyhood home in
 1-7     Hamilton, Texas, an area that was settled by his forebears in the
 1-8     1840s; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, His first lessons in art began in Hamilton, on the
1-10     front porch of his Aunt Edith's home; after more formal training,
1-11     including bachelor's and master's degrees in fine art from The
1-12     University of Texas, Mr. Embrey returned to the homes and fields of
1-13     Hamilton for his subjects; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The criteria for being named Texas State Artist
1-15     include six factors: the merit of the work, the artist's history of
1-16     achievement, the reflection within the artist's body of work of the
1-17     rich artistic and cultural heritage of Texas, a record of
1-18     charitable donations to community groups or causes, critical
1-19     reviews or articles, and letters of recommendation; on each count,
1-20     Mr. Embrey and his art have risen well above the standards; and
1-21           WHEREAS, His highly praised work has been exhibited in New
1-22     York  and  London  in group and  solo shows, and  can be  found in
1-23     numerous private, public, and corporate collections; his donations
1-24     have benefited many Texas organizations, from the Hamilton County
 2-1     Hospital, woman's council, and public library to the San Antonio
 2-2     Art Institute and the Alamo City's public television station; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Mr. Embrey's paintings capture the graceful but
 2-4     regrettable slip into history of open plowed fields, unpaved county
 2-5     roads, and old homes, and the unseen figures who live there; his
 2-6     love of the land and substance of Texas is undoubted and his talent
 2-7     and ability are apparent, and Mr. Embrey is indeed an eminently
 2-8     appropriate choice for state artist; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby congratulate Carl Rice Embrey on his selection
2-11     as Texas State Artist in two-dimensional media for 1998-1999 and
2-12     extend to him warmest best wishes for continued success and
2-13     happiness; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15     prepared for Mr. Embrey as an expression of high regard by the
2-16     Texas House of Representatives.
