R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Carter Monroe "Buck" Newsome of Marfa
 1-2     on February 28, 1999, at the age of 85, brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family and many friends of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Newsome was born April 12, 1913,
 1-5     in Bosque County and was a Marfa resident since 1953; he married
 1-6     the former Beth "Bette" Overbey on June 2, 1942, in Brownwood, and
 1-7     they shared a lengthy, loving union filled with many happy times
 1-8     and cherished family memories; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman served with the United
1-10     States Army during World War II, landing on Omaha Beach with the
1-11     744th Tank Battalion on D-Day; a recipient of the prestigious
1-12     Purple Heart, Mr. Newsome was honorably discharged from the Army on
1-13     November 11, 1944; and
1-14           WHEREAS, After returning to Texas he worked with the United
1-15     States Border Patrol until 1959; he then purchased the Chisos
1-16     Remuda, located in the Chisos Mountains Basin of Big Bend National
1-17     Park, which he owned and operated until 1972; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Newsome also wrote "Shod With Iron," a book
1-19     chosen by the Midland public library to be recorded on audiotape
1-20     for the visually impaired; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Although Carter Monroe "Buck" Newsome is deeply
1-22     missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of all those
1-23     fortunate enough to have known him, and it is indeed fitting to
1-24     honor his memory at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-1           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-2     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Carter Monroe "Buck"
 2-3     Newsome and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
 2-4     to his wife, Bette Newsome; to his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and
 2-5     Susan B.  Newsome; to his two step-grandchildren, Emily and Gina
 2-6     Cafley; to his brother and sister-in-law, Bill J. and Maxine
 2-7     Newsome; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it
 2-8     further
 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-11     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-12     Carter Monroe "Buck" Newsome.
