                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The North American Brain Tumor Coalition is
 1-2     sponsoring the second annual Brain Tumor Awareness Week on May 2-8,
 1-3     1999, and this significant event is truly worthy of special
 1-4     recognition; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Comprising seven charitable organizations, the North
 1-6     American Brain Tumor Coalition is endeavoring to eradicate brain
 1-7     tumors while heightening public awareness of this devastating
 1-8     disease; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Annually over 100,000 people in the United States
1-10     are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor, a total
1-11     that for unknown reasons continues to increase; located at the
1-12     control center for thought, emotion, and movement, brain tumors can
1-13     have devastating and long term effects on both physical and
1-14     cognitive abilities; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Primary malignant tumors are the second leading
1-16     cause of cancer deaths for children under age 19 and the third
1-17     leading cause of cancer deaths for those between the ages of 20 and
1-18     39; enhancing the quality of life of people with brain tumors
1-19     requires extensive care and rehabilitation, further necessitating
1-20     research into the causes of and treatments for this serious malady;
1-21     and
1-22           WHEREAS, The second annual Brain Tumor Awareness Week is
1-23     truly an important event that will undoubtedly assist in the
1-24     further education of all Texans on this important issue; now,
 2-1     therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-3     Legislature hereby recognize May 2-8, 1999, as Brain Tumor
 2-4     Awareness Week and encourage all to learn more about this disease.
