                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Zarinah Shakir of San Antonio is an outstanding
 1-2     community leader, and her many notable achievements are truly
 1-3     worthy of special recognition; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of New York, Mrs. Shakir graduated from
 1-5     Linton High School in Schenectady, where she is still the record
 1-6     holder in the 50-yard dash, and she pursued her higher education at
 1-7     Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and Hampton University in
 1-8     Virginia; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, For the past 13 years Mrs. Shakir has lived in San
1-10     Antonio, where from 1990 to 1997 she owned and operated the
1-11     successful business, A Golden Linen Service; currently she is the
1-12     owner and publisher of the San Antonio Observer, a newspaper
1-13     founded in 1994 to address issues of concern to the
1-14     African-American community; and
1-15           WHEREAS, This dedicated civic leader has served on the board
1-16     of directors for the Black Business Expo and is a member of the
1-17     Paragon Cable Advisory Board; in recognition of her contributions
1-18     she has received numerous honors, including the Entrepreneur of the
1-19     Year Award from the Nation of Islam, "40 Under Forty" Award from
1-20     the San Antonio Business Journal, and Quality of Life Work Horse
1-21     Award from Southwest Community Empowerment Center; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Throughout the years Mrs. Shakir has continued to
1-23     draw strength and inspiration from her husband, Omar Shakir, and
1-24     her three children, Salim, Munir, and Nadirah; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Zarinah Shakir has distinguished herself as a vital
 2-2     and valued member of the San Antonio community, and it is most
 2-3     appropriate that she be recognized for her myriad accomplishments
 2-4     at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby honor Zarinah Shakir for her many significant
 2-7     civic contributions and extend to her sincere best wishes for
 2-8     continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10     prepared for Mrs. Shakir as an expression of high regard by the
2-11     Texas House of Representatives.
