R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Internet has become an increasingly important 1-2 force in the economy of the United States and Texas, bringing 1-3 revolutionary change to our communications and commerce; and 1-4 WHEREAS, In 1996, the Internet and associated high-tech 1-5 industry generated more than 343,000 jobs with a total payroll 1-6 estimated at $17.2 billion in Texas, making those related business 1-7 ventures the number one employer in the state; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The Internet and its growth will have profound 1-9 implications on the future of Texas and its people, transcending 1-10 traditional technology development and marketplace impacts; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The American Legislative Exchange Council and the 1-12 U.S. Internet Council are jointly sponsoring an Internet Workshop 1-13 at the DoubleTree Guest Suites in Austin on April 27 and 28 for 1-14 members of the Texas Legislature to examine and discuss public 1-15 policy issues and concerns surrounding this revolutionary 1-16 technology; and 1-17 WHEREAS, A panel of experts from throughout the nation will 1-18 come to Austin to share the latest advancements on this dynamic new 1-19 frontier, including contemporary developments in other states; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Texas faces numerous issues related to the Internet, 1-21 such as security encryption, electronic authorization, taxation, 1-22 privacy, and viruses; and 1-23 WHEREAS, All members of the legislature, as well as 1-24 interested parties from the private sector, are urged to take 2-1 advantage of this unique opportunity and be in attendance for these 2-2 workshops on the afternoon of April 27 and the morning of April 28; 2-3 now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby recognize April 26-30, 1999, as Texas Internet 2-6 Week and encourage all Texans to learn more about this pervasive 2-7 new force for the future of our state.
