R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Educator and visionary Dorothy Redus Robinson will
 1-2     celebrate her 90th birthday on May 2, 1999, and it is indeed a
 1-3     privilege to join in paying tribute to this esteemed woman at this
 1-4     time; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Sublime, Texas, Mrs. Robinson began her
 1-6     illustrious teaching career in 1928 and earned a bachelor's degree
 1-7     from Prairie View College; she later gained a master's degree from
 1-8     San Francisco State Teachers College and continued in her pursuit
 1-9     of academic excellence with advanced studies at The University of
1-10     Texas at Austin, Syracuse University, Fisk University, East Texas
1-11     State University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the
1-12     University of Arizona; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Mrs. Robinson's career as an educator was
1-14     distinguished by her longtime support of underrepresented members
1-15     of society, be they children of minorities or the mentally and
1-16     physically challenged; in 1966, she helped to revise the State
1-17     Curriculum Guide for the Education of Mentally Retarded Children,
1-18     and her significant influence as a leader in the desegregation of
1-19     Texas schools was well known when she retired as principal of the
1-20     integrated Rusk School in Palestine in 1974; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Appointed to the Advisory Council for
1-22     Technical-Vocational Education by Governor Preston E. Smith in
1-23     1969, she was reappointed to the council by Governor Dolph Briscoe,
1-24     and from 1975 to 1978 she served as head of that noteworthy group;
 2-1     and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Mrs. Robinson's 41 years as an educator included
 2-3     periods as an elementary school teacher, homemaking teacher,
 2-4     coordinator and teacher of special education students, and
 2-5     principal, and her lifelong commitment to the children of Texas is
 2-6     truly deserving of special legislative recognition; now, therefore,
 2-7     be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby congratulate Dorothy Redus Robinson on the
2-10     occasion of her 90th birthday and commend her for her myriad
2-11     contributions to the field of education in the Lone Star State;
2-12     and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Mrs. Robinson as an expression of high regard by the
2-15     Texas House of Representatives.
