R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Umon Goff, on March 20, 1999, at the 1-2 age of 73, has brought a great loss to the family and friends of 1-3 this beloved gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Goff was born in Marksville, Louisiana, on 1-5 January 25, 1926, and honorably served his country as a member of 1-6 the armed forces during World War II; in 1953 he moved his family 1-7 to La Marque and began his lengthy tenure at the Monsanto Chemical 1-8 Plant in Texas City, where he worked for 31 years; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In addition to his employment at the Monsanto 1-10 Chemical Plant, Mr. Goff owned and operated a residential and 1-11 commercial construction company and contributed to his community as 1-12 a member, deacon, and trustee of Greater Bell Zion Baptist Church 1-13 and as a member of La Marque Masonic Lodge No. 373 F&AM; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Goff was a leader in local politics and civic 1-15 organizations, serving as vice-president of the Mainland Branch 1-16 NAACP and as chairman and judge of Precinct 331; he was also a 1-17 member of the Mainland Coalition of Black Democrats, the State 1-18 Coalition of Black Democrats, the Galveston County Democratic 1-19 Party, and the North Galveston County Democratic Party, and he 1-20 served as a delegate for his county Democratic convention and the 1-21 state Democratic convention; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the love and 1-23 friendship of Umon Goff will long miss his presence and guidance, 1-24 and he will surely be remembered with great affection and 2-1 admiration for many years to come; now, therefore, be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th 2-3 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Umon Goff and 2-4 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-5 Matilda Williams Goff; to his daughters and sons-in-law, Amy G. 2-6 Bowie and her husband, Curtis, and Ann G. Hanson and her husband, 2-7 Odell; to his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Goff, Jimmy Goff 2-8 and his wife, Shirley, Raymon K. Goff and his wife, Willie; to his 2-9 grandchildren, Eric Bowie and his wife, LaNa, Roderick Goff and his 2-10 wife, Tonya, Jermaine Goff, Dorian Goff, Shawn Delce and her 2-11 husband, George, Sherrie Bledsoe, and Asia Goff; to his 2-12 great-grandchildren, Erica Bowie, Roderick J. Goff II, and Tristin 2-13 Delce; to his sisters, Shirley G. Lair and Katie G. Jeter; and to 2-14 the many other relatives and friends of this respected gentleman; 2-15 and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-18 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-19 Umon Goff.
