R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, In 1964 the Economic Opportunity Act was signed into 1-2 law creating Community Action Agencies, whose mission is to assure 1-3 that the issues of the poor are effectively heard and addressed; 1-4 and 1-5 WHEREAS, Community Action Agencies have a 35-year history of 1-6 promoting self-sufficiency for those with a severely limited 1-7 income; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Collaborating with faith-based groups, national 1-9 organizations such as the American Red Cross, and the business 1-10 sector, these agencies include locally elected officials, business 1-11 entities, and people with limited incomes among their board members 1-12 to ensure support throughout the community; and 1-13 WHEREAS, In Texas, 49 Community Action Agencies in 248 1-14 counties have made essential contributions to Texans and their 1-15 families by providing them with innovative and cost-effective 1-16 programs; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Lending support and assistance to individuals and 1-18 families struggling in conditions of poverty is an essential step 1-19 to keep the American dream within the grasp of all citizens, and 1-20 efforts of Community Action Agencies in this regard are truly 1-21 worthy of special praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-23 Legislature hereby recognize May 1999 as Community Action Month in 1-24 the State of Texas and encourage all Texans to support the efforts 2-1 of those involved with the work of Community Action Agencies.
