R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
1-2 congratulate Hardin-Simmons University student Kristi Cargill on
1-3 the publication of Nana's New Home, her book about Alzheimer's
1-4 disease written specifically for children; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Ms. Cargill chose a topic unusual for a children's
1-6 story theme and one that also challenges adults--understanding
1-7 Alzheimer's disease and learning how to cope when afflicted loved
1-8 ones no longer recognize family and friends; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Nana's New Home gently explains what is happening to
1-10 a child's grandmother in a format geared to children of
1-11 prekindergarten age to age nine; this appealing story features a
1-12 young granddaughter and her stuffed rabbit, Webster, who appears in
1-13 the girl's dreams to advise and comfort her; the child learns to
1-14 accept the reality of the situation and be supportive of her
1-15 grandmother; and
1-16 WHEREAS, A dozen years spent as a volunteer at elderly care
1-17 facilities profoundly influenced Ms. Cargill and led her to write,
1-18 publish, and market this unique literary effort; at the age of
1-19 eight she began visiting patients at an Alzheimer's care facility
1-20 where her mother worked, and at 16 she organized a junior volunteer
1-21 program; proceeds from her book will benefit residents of the
1-22 center with limited financial resources; and
1-23 WHEREAS, By writing this guide to Alzheimer's disease, Kristi
1-24 Cargill has provided an urgently needed tool for children and their
2-1 families to understand and cope with this complex illness; now,
2-2 therefore, be it
2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-4 Legislature hereby congratulate Kristi Cargill on the publication
2-5 of her book, Nana's New Home, and extend to her sincere best wishes
2-6 for continued success in all her endeavors; and, be it further
2-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-8 prepared for Ms. Cargill as an expression of high regard by the
2-9 Texas House of Representatives.
