R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The year 1999 marks the 100th anniversary of the San 1-2 Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), and this noteworthy 1-3 occasion is truly deserving of special recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, On May 2, 1899, San Antonio public schools became 1-5 independent of city governance with the election of their first 1-6 board of trustees, and in 1903 the first charter of the San Antonio 1-7 Independent School District was established; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The ensuing century has seen the SAISD achieve 1-9 acclaim for its many significant accomplishments, which include 1-10 implementing the nation's first comprehensive junior school system 1-11 in 1923 and opening the first facility in Texas for physically 1-12 handicapped students in 1945; today the district boasts 95 schools 1-13 and more than 60,000 students and features a truly innovative and 1-14 all-encompassing academic environment; and 1-15 WHEREAS, For 100 years the San Antonio Independent School 1-16 District has provided its students with an exemplary education, and 1-17 it is most appropriate that we pay tribute to this estimable 1-18 organization on its attainment of such a significant milestone; 1-19 now, therefore, be it 1-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-21 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the San 1-22 Antonio Independent School District and extend to its students, 1-23 faculty, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, 1-24 be it further 2-1 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-2 prepared for the San Antonio Independent School District as an 2-3 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
