By Cuellar H.R. No. 808 76R14400 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Oscar H. Garza, Jr., of Laredo has been chosen a 1-2 Hero for Children by the State Board of Education, and in light of 1-3 this outstanding honor, it is indeed appropriate to pay tribute to 1-4 this distinguished civic leader; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Garza graduated from Laredo Junior College and 1-6 earned a business administration degree from Texas A&I University; 1-7 he later served with distinction in the United States Army and 1-8 Central Army Group; and 1-9 WHEREAS, For 30 years he has been a vital and valued employee 1-10 of the federal government, and his exemplary service has been 1-11 recognized with such honors as the Commissioner's Award and the 1-12 Newton-Azrak Award; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He is currently the assistant chief patrol agent for 1-14 the Laredo sector of the United States Border Patrol; in this 1-15 position he serves as senior manager of the Drug Demand Reduction 1-16 and Head of the Class programs and coordinates the horse and bike 1-17 patrol, construction projects, and programs that include Explorer 1-18 Scouting, equal employment opportunity, air operations, and health 1-19 and safety; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The public-spirited Mr. Garza has been active as 1-21 chairman and president of the South Texas Alzheimer's Organization, 1-22 Laredo Guardian Volunteer, Inc., Laredo Elderly Services, and the 1-23 Laredo Regional Food Bank; he has also donated his time and 1-24 expertise to the Laredo Independent School District, Judges 2-1 Juvenile Group, Webb County Task Force for Domestic Violence, 2-2 United Way of Laredo, Mercy Regional Medical Center, and a number 2-3 of other deserving groups too numerous to mention; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Some of his endeavors in behalf of community youth 2-5 include finding placements for students to volunteer and practice 2-6 their business skills, founding the Youth Appreciation Night event, 2-7 securing numerous grants and scholarships, and being a guest 2-8 speaker at conferences that promote vocational programs in Laredo; 2-9 and 2-10 WHEREAS, Oscar H. Garza, Jr., has greatly benefited the 2-11 citizens of Laredo and the Lone Star State, and it is most fitting 2-12 to honor him for his many significant accomplishments; now, 2-13 therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby congratulate Oscar H. Garza, Jr., on being named 2-16 a Hero for Children by the State Board of Education and commend him 2-17 for his myriad civic contributions; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-19 prepared for Mr. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-20 House of Representatives.
