No. 830 76R14393 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of LaFray Carter on November 14, 1998, 1-2 brought a great loss to the many friends and relatives of this 1-3 esteemed Smithville educator; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Austin, Mrs. Carter encouraged her 1-5 students to pursue their dreams throughout an outstanding career as 1-6 a home economics teacher that spanned 39 years; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Far from limiting her expertise to the classroom, 1-8 she also served the cause of education as the first African 1-9 American elected to the Smithville school board, and during her 1-10 fine tenure on the board, she set high standards to which others 1-11 may aspire; and 1-12 WHEREAS, LaFray Carter was a productive and valued member of 1-13 her community; although she is deeply missed, her remarkable spirit 1-14 lives on in the hearts of the many individuals whose lives she 1-15 touched during her time on this earth; now, therefore, be it 1-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-17 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of LaFray Carter and 1-18 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her sons, 1-19 Thomas Carter and Michael Carter; to her stepson, Allen Carter, 1-20 Jr.; to her stepdaughter, Gloria Newton; and to the many other 1-21 relatives and friends of this beloved woman; and, be it further 1-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 1-23 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 1-24 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-1 LaFray Carter.
