R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Martin Carl Reed on April 11, 1999, 1-2 at the age of 85, has brought a great loss to the family and 1-3 friends of this respected gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on August 6, 1913, in Sterling County, Mr. Reed 1-5 graduated from Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, 1-6 Philadelphia Textile School, in 1935 and returned to Sterling City 1-7 to become the owner and operator of Reed Wool Warehouse; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed had a deep and abiding love for the land 1-9 and he owned ranches in Sterling, Tom Green, and Irion Counties; 1-10 for his ecologically responsible ranching, he was voted 1-11 "Conservation Rancher of the Year" by the Concho River Soil & Water 1-12 Conservation District; and 1-13 WHEREAS, In addition to his award for land conservation, 1-14 Mr. Reed exhibited his skill as a rancher in 1996 when he won all 1-15 four categories at the special feeder calf sale, a first in the 1-16 history of the annual sale; and 1-17 WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, this beloved man 1-18 married the former Mary Helen Mims on January 12, 1936, and they 1-19 were blessed with one son, Mims Carl Reed; affectionately named 1-20 "Kickum" by his first grandchild, Mr. Reed was proud of his two 1-21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship 1-23 and love of Martin Carl Reed will long miss his presence and 1-24 guidance, and he will surely be remembered with great affection and 2-1 admiration for many years to come; now, therefore, be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-3 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Martin Carl Reed and 2-4 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, 2-5 Mary Helen Reed; to his son and daughter-in-law, Mims Carl and 2-6 Karen Reed; to his sister, Johnnie Bess Wallace; to his 2-7 grandchildren, Kelly Reed Fulghum and her husband, Ben, and Thomas 2-8 Carl Reed and his wife, Debbie; to his great-grandchildren, Kate 2-9 Fulghum, Anne Fulghum, Taylor Courtney Reed, and Misty Craig; and 2-10 to the other relatives and many friends of this esteemed gentleman; 2-11 and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-13 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-14 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-15 Martin Carl Reed.
