                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is widely recognized as the
 1-2     Tejano music capital of the world and the Texas House of
 1-3     Representatives takes great pride in honoring Tejano music, for
 1-4     much like our state, this rich and varied musical style represents
 1-5     a blend of both old and new worlds; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The roots of Tejano music pulse in a style called
 1-7     conjunto, which represents an incorporation of the corridos and
 1-8     rancheras of northern Mexico heartily mixed with the accordion and
 1-9     strings of German immigrants; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Always popular in South Texas, the propulsive
1-11     rhythms  of Hispanic music first began to be felt in the nation's
1-12     mainstream during the 1960s and 1970s, as Latino artists
1-13     strengthened their influence in rock, pop, and rhythm and blues
1-14     formats; and
1-15           WHEREAS, It was the late Selena Quintanilla-Perez who
1-16     experienced the most dramatic success with the style, however; her
1-17     unique blend of Tejano, cumbia, and rock music styles made the
1-18     Corpus Christi teenager a superstar before her tragic death in
1-19     1995, and she remains a powerful influence even today; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The musical energy of Tejano inspires and fosters
1-21     pride among many people and sells millions of compact discs each
1-22     year, and the music continues to reach larger and larger audiences;
 2-1     the 16th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio drew more
 2-2     than 40,000 listeners and even included a conjunto band from Japan;
 2-3     and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Tejano music represents the rich ethnic heritage and
 2-5     history of our state and nation; it is a musical style that has
 2-6     become a record of the shared themes and mutual influences of the
 2-7     many different cultures within our state, one that reaches deep
 2-8     into the heart of Texas, and it is indeed appropriate to recognize
 2-9     Tejano music at this time; and
2-10           WHEREAS, Tejano musicians and musicians who perform other
2-11     varieties of Latin music have needed to struggle to receive the
2-12     same rights, protection, and compensation as other music
2-13     performers; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-15     Legislature hereby encourages the people of Texas--
2-16                 (1)  to reflect upon and celebrate Tejano music and
2-17     other forms of Latin music;
2-18                 (2)  to recognize that Tejano musicians and musicians
2-19     who perform other varieties of Latin music deserve the same rights,
2-20     protection, and compensation as other music performers; and
2-21                 (3)  to provide resources and support for the
2-22     preservation of Latin music.
