R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Colonel Roy A. Murray
1-2 of El Paso were greatly saddened by his passing on December 16,
1-3 1998, at the age of 89; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Colonel Murray graduated from
1-5 the University of California at Berkeley before joining the United
1-6 States Army Reserves as a second lieutenant; he was eventually sent
1-7 to Ireland in 1942 in preparation for America's entrance into World
1-8 War II and while there was accepted into the prestigious Darby's
1-9 Rangers; and
1-10 WHEREAS, His lengthy military career was full of many
1-11 remarkable accomplishments, including participating in the Dieppe
1-12 Raid in France, earning the Silver Star for raiding German general
1-13 Erwin Rommel's forces in Africa, leading forces in the invasion of
1-14 Italy, commanding the 32nd Infantry Regiment during the Korean War,
1-15 and attempting to halt construction of the Berlin Wall; and
1-16 WHEREAS, After more than 31 years of service Colonel Murray
1-17 retired from the military in 1964 and began working for Northrup
1-18 Ventura Corporation in California; in 1966 he was transferred to El
1-19 Paso, where he would later have a successful real estate and
1-20 insurance career; and
1-21 WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman donated his time and talents
1-22 to the Northeast El Paso Rotary Club, YMCA, General Omar Bradley
1-23 Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, and
1-24 Department of Veterans Affairs; he continued to be active with
2-1 Darby's Rangers and the army, conducting officer development
2-2 programs at the Sergeant Majors Academy at Fort Bliss, and in 1993
2-3 was honored by being inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort
2-4 Benning, Georgia; and
2-5 WHEREAS, A distinguished patriot and war hero, Colonel Murray
2-6 will indeed be deeply missed; his spirit will live on in the hearts
2-7 and minds of all those fortunate enough to have known him, and it
2-8 is truly fitting to honor his memory at this time; now, therefore,
2-9 be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Colonel Roy A. Murray
2-12 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-13 son, Roy A. Murray, Jr.; to his daughters-in-law, Nancy and Mary
2-14 Ann; to his seven grandchildren, Roy IV, Robert, Jessica, Karen,
2-15 Steven, Melissa, and Chantel; to his three great-grandchildren,
2-16 Donny, Tristian, and Cyenna; and to his many other relatives and
2-17 friends; and, be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-19 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-20 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-21 Colonel Roy A. Murray.
