                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. John W. Pate on March 4, 1999, at
 1-2     the age of 82, has brought a great loss to the family and many
 1-3     friends of this esteemed resident of Alpine; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born and raised in Sulphur Springs, Texas, Dr. Pate
 1-5     graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1936; he began
 1-6     his study of medicine at Baylor University Medical School and
 1-7     graduated with his medical degree in 1940; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, This fine gentleman joined the Army Air Corps and
 1-9     served his country with distinction during World War II as a
1-10     participant in the Omaha Beach landing and as a member of the
1-11     Allied offensive in France and Germany; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Dr. Pate established his practice in Sanderson in
1-13     January 1946 as the town's only physician and surgeon; he remained
1-14     extremely busy treating the citizens of the area, and the demands
1-15     on his time were compounded by the polio epidemic of the late 1940s
1-16     and early 1950s; and
1-17           WHEREAS, In 1953, Dr. Pate took a leave of absence from his
1-18     medical practice to study surgery and pathology at the University
1-19     of Vienna in Austria; two years later he opened his practice of
1-20     medicine, surgery, and obstetrics in Alpine, and during the next
1-21     four decades, he served the residents of West Texas with compassion
1-22     and dedication until his retirement from active medical practice in
1-23     1995; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship of
 2-1     Dr. John W.  Pate will long miss his presence, and he will surely
 2-2     be remembered with great affection and admiration for many years to
 2-3     come; now, therefore, be it
 2-4           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-5     Legislature hereby honor the memory of Dr. John W. Pate and extend
 2-6     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his sons and
 2-7     daughters-in-law, Dr. John W. Pate, Jr. and Rhonda Pate, Dr.
 2-8     William Bart Pate and Cathy Pate, Dr. Robert Mark Pate and Margie
 2-9     Pate, Peter and Kacy Pate, and Richard Pate; to his brother and
2-10     sister-in-law, Dr. Carter Pate and Dottie Pate; and to the many
2-11     other friends and relatives of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it
2-12     further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for the members of his family, and that when the Texas
2-15     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-16     Dr. John W. Pate.
