R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of James Warren Roberts on December 20,
1-2 1997, at the age of 74, brought a great loss to the friends and
1-3 relatives of this esteemed Andrews resident; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born October 4, 1923, in Toyah, Texas, he graduated
1-5 from Andrews High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1941; during
1-6 his meritorious service in World War II, he was wounded and
1-7 captured at the Battle of Anzio, and returned home in 1946; and
1-8 WHEREAS, On completing military service, Mr. Roberts married
1-9 the former Marie Holman in 1946 and attended Texas Tech University;
1-10 he continued his higher education at Baylor University, earning his
1-11 degree in journalism from that institution in 1950; and
1-12 WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts followed in his father's footsteps by
1-13 entering the field of publishing; he was chairman of the board of
1-14 Roberts Publishing Company and publisher of the Andrews County
1-15 News, and for years he entertained and enlightened readers as
1-16 author of the "Drifting Sands" column; and
1-17 WHEREAS, A respected voice in his profession, Mr. Roberts
1-18 served as president of the Texas Press Association and the West
1-19 Texas Press Association; and
1-20 WHEREAS, He worked to benefit his fellow citizens as
1-21 president of the Andrews Industrial Foundation, which significantly
1-22 contributed to the area's growing economy, and he also held the
1-23 office of president for two terms with the Andrews Chamber of
1-24 Commerce and for 12 years with the Permian Basin Railroad Company;
2-1 and
2-2 WHEREAS, In recognition of his outstanding achievements in
2-3 behalf of the city he loved, Mr. Roberts was named Andrews Citizen
2-4 of the Year in 1963; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts truly exemplified the qualities that
2-6 define community service; although his presence is deeply missed,
2-7 his remarkable spirit lives on in the hearts of the many people
2-8 whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
2-9 therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of James Warren Roberts
2-12 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-13 wife, Marie Holman Roberts; to his sons, Phillip Roberts and
2-14 Randall Roberts; to his brother, Wesley Roberts; and to the many
2-15 other friends and relatives of this beloved gentleman; and, be it
2-16 further
2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-19 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-20 James Warren Roberts.
