R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Waverly Park Elementary School in Fort Worth for winning the 1999 1-3 Margaret McNamara Readers Cup in the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) 1-4 National Reading Challenge sponsored by the Metropolitan Life 1-5 Foundation; and 1-6 WHEREAS, RIF promotes children's and family literacy programs 1-7 that help prepare young children for reading and motivate 1-8 school-age children to read; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Waverly Park Elementary School students earned this 1-10 prestigious national award, the first Texas school to be so 1-11 honored, by reading and recording 10,285 hours and 21 minutes 1-12 during a two-week period from February 12-25, an average of 19 1-13 reading hours per student; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The school's RIF coordinator, Carol McQuien, 1-15 stimulated student interest in the project by creating a mystery 1-16 scenario in which RIF volumes had been "booknapped," and children 1-17 logged reading hours to pay the ransom and to receive clues as to 1-18 the whereabouts of the missing books; and 1-19 WHEREAS, On May 12, 1999, at the Waverly Park Auditorium, 1-20 Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, chairman of the board for RIF, will 1-21 present the school with its well-deserved trophy, and Waverly Park 1-22 Elementary School will also receive 540 RIF books, $250 for the 1-23 school's RIF budget, and a school-wide celebration sponsored by 1-24 Metropolitan Life Foundation; and 2-1 WHEREAS, In addition to being the most essential tool in the 2-2 learning process, reading can also be an imaginative and 2-3 exhilarating experience; the example set by the students at Waverly 2-4 Park Elementary School in earning this significant accolade is an 2-5 inspiration to all Texans, and they are indeed worthy of special 2-6 recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Jane Marshall, principal, and 2-9 the students, faculty, and staff at Waverly Park Elementary School 2-10 on winning the 1999 Margaret McNamara Readers Cup in the Reading Is 2-11 Fundamental National Reading Challenge and extend to them sincere 2-12 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for prominent display at Waverly Park Elementary School as 2-15 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
