R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Vernon High School Lions track team achieved the 1-2 pinnacle of success by winning the 1998 UIL Class 3-A State Track 1-3 cochampionship, and its achievement truly merits special 1-4 legislative recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Although trailing in the meet with only three events 1-6 remaining, the Lions demonstrated true championship spirit by 1-7 winning two of the final three contests to claim a tie for the 1-8 coveted crown; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The 1998 championship season was a result of 1-10 dedication and hard work from track team members Brenton Gabbert, 1-11 J. R. Holder, Phillip Chavez, Chedrick Ricks, Ed Cherry, Earl Goss, 1-12 and Sidnei Gaines; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Head coach Lee Schur provided outstanding 1-14 leadership, enabling each of his gifted athletes to perform to the 1-15 best of his ability, and he was ably supported in his endeavors by 1-16 athletic director Mike Portwood, track coach Bill Blythe, and 1-17 trainer Tim Marshall; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The 1998 track cochampionship is a source of 1-19 enduring pride to the students and faculty at Vernon High School, 1-20 as well as their supporters in the community, and it is indeed 1-21 appropriate that the team be honored for its accomplishment; now, 1-22 therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 1-24 Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Vernon High 2-1 School Lions track team on winning the 1998 UIL Class 3-A State 2-2 Track cochampionship and extend to them best wishes for continued 2-3 success; and, be it further 2-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-5 prepared for prominent display at Vernon High School as an 2-6 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
