                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     recognize the students and staff of O. Henry Middle School in
 1-3     Austin for their outstanding efforts  to promote the International
 1-4     Day Without Violence; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The International Day Without Violence initiative
 1-6     began in 1996, in response to a tragic series of senseless and
 1-7     violent deaths involving Texas youth; one of the most popular
 1-8     activities sponsored by O. Henry Middle School to commemorate this
 1-9     day was the rap, poetry, and poster contest, and many creative,
1-10     touching, and inspiring entries were submitted for evaluation at
1-11     the school and then submitted for districtwide competition; and
1-12           WHEREAS, O. Henry Middle School students took first place in
1-13     both the rap and poetry contests; the winners received $250 as a
1-14     prize, and they were recognized at the State Capitol during a rally
1-15     on April 10, 1999, following a city march against violence; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Lindsey Steaples, an eighth grader at O. Henry, won
1-17     the poetry division, and the winners of the rap category were the
1-18     school's sixth-grade rap team consisting of Adolfo Guevara, Moses
1-19     Hernandez, Jeremy Johnson, Trent Mitchell, and Donald Williams; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Each of these students represents the promise and
1-21     potential for a nonviolent future, and it is justly appropriate to
1-22     recognize them at this time; now, therefore, be it
1-23           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
1-24     Legislature hereby recognize the students and staff of O. Henry
 2-1     Middle School for their highly successful International Day Without
 2-2     Violence program and extend to each of them warmest best wishes for
 2-3     great happiness and success throughout their lives; and, be it
 2-4     further
 2-5           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-6     prepared for prominent display at O. Henry Middle School as an
 2-7     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
