R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, J. Neal Miller, Jr., is retiring from his position
 1-2     with Chevron on June 30, 1999, ending his exemplary career as the
 1-3     company's oldest continuous service employee; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born January 18, 1926, in Orange, Texas, he attended
 1-5     Texas A&M University as an engineering major and was a member of
 1-6     the Army ROTC Corps of Cadets; although he interrupted his academic
 1-7     studies for military service, he returned to college and earned a
 1-8     bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M
 1-9     University and a second bachelor's degree in aeronautical
1-10     engineering from the Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Mr. Miller began his meritorious military service in
1-12     World War II as a member of the combat infantry, and became an
1-13     aircraft pilot; during his eight years in the armed forces, which
1-14     spanned World War II to the Korean War, he earned nine decorations,
1-15     including the Distinguished Flying Cross, and he also participated
1-16     in the design and development of the first U.S.  rocket-powered
1-17     airplane; and
1-18           WHEREAS, He joined the staff of Gulf Oil Company in the
1-19     mid-1960s in the labor relations department at the Port Arthur
1-20     refinery, and he was later employed as a public relations
1-21     representative for the company in Philadelphia; while on loan from
1-22     Gulf, this talented individual served with the Nixon
1-23     administration, subsequently rejoining the company to become the
1-24     regional vice president for the southeast, followed by an
 2-1     assignment as vice president of public affairs and advertising in
 2-2     Houston; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, After the merger of Gulf Oil Company into Chevron in
 2-4     1984, Mr. Miller relocated to Austin, where he ably represented the
 2-5     company's interests and was responsible for handling public affairs
 2-6     in the Permian Basin; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Also a civic-minded individual, he has served in the
 2-8     past as mayor of the City of Orange, president of the Orange
 2-9     Chamber of Commerce and Orange Rotary Club, and district governor
2-10     of Rotary International, and as district commissioner for the Boy
2-11     Scouts of America; and
2-12           WHEREAS, He currently serves his fellow Texans as a board
2-13     member of such worthy organizations as the Austin Symphony, Texas
2-14     Good Roads/Transportation Association, both the Texas and U.S. Oil
2-15     & Gas associations, and the Texas Association of Business and
2-16     Chambers of Commerce and he is a respected member of the Interstate
2-17     Oil and Gas Compact Commission from Texas; and
2-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Miller has achieved a level of success in his
2-19     life to which all can aspire, and as he looks back on his career,
2-20     he can indeed reflect with tremendous satisfaction on his many
2-21     significant accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
2-22           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-23     Legislature hereby congratulate J. Neal Miller, Jr., on his
2-24     remarkable career at Chevron and extend to him warmest best wishes
2-25     for a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be it further
2-26           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-27     prepared for Mr. Miller as an expression of high regard by the
 3-1     Texas House of Representatives.
