R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives takes great pride in 1-2 joining the Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals 1-3 (HAHMP) in honoring veteran Houston journalist Sylvan Rodriguez, 1-4 for his many years of professional news coverage and community 1-5 involvement indeed merit special legislative recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, An affiliate of the National Association of 1-7 Hispanic Journalists, HAHMP was formed to support and encourage the 1-8 practice of journalism by Hispanics and to promote a fair and 1-9 accurate portrayal of Hispanics in the media; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since 1986, the group has awarded more than 1-11 $100,000 in scholarships to journalism students while contributing 1-12 regularly to the Houston Hispanic Forum's Annual Career & Education 1-13 Day activities, reaching countless Hispanic students and their 1-14 families; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Sylvan Rodriguez is a founding member of HAHMP, and 1-16 he has been an important figure in Houston journalism since 1977; 1-17 in his many years of experience he has covered the Texas 1-18 Legislature and national political conventions, interviewed five 1-19 U.S. presidents, become a recognized authority on NASA and space 1-20 reporting, and appeared on a number of news-related television 1-21 shows, including "ABC World News Tonight," "Nightline," and "Good 1-22 Morning America"; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Anchor of the noon and six o'clock news broadcasts 1-24 of KHOU-TV Channel 11 in Houston, he has received numerous honors 2-1 and awards from the Associated Press, United Press International, 2-2 and Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism fraternity; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Rodriguez is an active and dedicated member of 2-4 the boards of many charitable and philanthropic organizations, 2-5 including the Museum of Natural Science, the American Cancer 2-6 Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Volunteer Center, 2-7 and I Have A Dream; his golf tournaments have raised money for the 2-8 Challenge Centers, United Cerebral Palsy, and the Tourette Syndrome 2-9 Association; and 2-10 WHEREAS, This exceptional Texas journalist will be honored at 2-11 the annual HAHMP fund-raising banquet on May 14, 1999; with the 2-12 theme "Sylvan Rodriguez: A Man of Valor," the event will feature 2-13 many of Mr. Rodriguez's colleagues and friends, including ABC's 2-14 "20/20" reporter John Quinones and a video tribute from former 2-15 president George Bush; and 2-16 WHEREAS, The event will help develop scholarships for 2-17 students who aim for a successful communications career, and it 2-18 serves as a wonderful opportunity to salute the work of this 2-19 distinguished man and his immeasurable contributions to his 2-20 community; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-22 Legislature hereby honor Sylvan Rodriguez on the occasion of his 2-23 tribute by the Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals 2-24 and extend to him warmest best wishes; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution 2-26 be prepared for Mr. Rodriguez as an expression of high regard by 2-27 the Texas House of Representatives.
