R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
1-2 in recognizing Lloyd D. Choice on his retirement after 37 years as
1-3 an educator and administrator, for his long and noteworthy career
1-4 indeed merits special legislative recognition; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A Tyler native and an exceptional scholar-athlete,
1-6 Mr. Choice graduated from Texas Southern University, where he was
1-7 an All-American football player, with both bachelor's and master's
1-8 degrees in fine arts; and
1-9 WHEREAS, His earliest teaching assignments were with Miller
1-10 Junior High School and Lanier Middle School, and included terms as
1-11 an instructor and as a coach; in 1972, he was appointed as a
1-12 curriculum writer for the Ethnic Arts Center Dropout Prevention
1-13 Program, an alternative education project with HOPE Development,
1-14 Inc.; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Choice also has an impressive background in art;
1-16 he participated in a Rice University art education program taught
1-17 by Elaine DeKooning and served as a project coordinator and curator
1-18 of the Black Arts Gallery of the prestigious Menil Foundation
1-19 Collection of African Art; and
1-20 WHEREAS, He returned to the Houston Independent School
1-21 District initially as assistant principal at Booker T. Washington
1-22 High School and later as principal at Gregory Lincoln Middle
1-23 School; his rapport with students and his respected ability as an
1-24 administrator led Mr. Choice to positions as principal of Kashmere
2-1 High School, deputy superintendent of HISD, and principal of Jack
2-2 Yates High School, where his tenure has been highlighted by the
2-3 distinction and dedication that marked his many previous
2-4 accomplishments; and
2-5 WHEREAS, He has been married to the former Ben Taye Stevenson
2-6 for 37 years and is a committed force within the community; he is a
2-7 former board member of the Downtown YMCA and a current member of
2-8 the State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic
2-9 League, and a frequent contributor of time and energy to a variety
2-10 of organizations that include the NAACP and the Boy Scouts of
2-11 America; and
2-12 WHEREAS, The talents and skills that Mr. Choice has exhibited
2-13 throughout his years in education will be deeply missed, but his
2-14 love for family, big game hunting, camping, and painting can assure
2-15 all that his retirement years will certainly be full, and it is a
2-16 great pleasure to join his many friends and colleagues in honoring
2-17 him at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-19 Legislature hereby commend Lloyd D. Choice for his many years of
2-20 commitment to the education of our state's children and extend to
2-21 him warmest best wishes for great happiness in the years ahead;
2-22 and, be it further
2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-24 prepared for Mr. Choice as an expression of highest regard by the
2-25 Texas House of Representatives.
