R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Juan Carlos Irizarry
1-2 of Bay City's Selkirk Community were greatly saddened by his
1-3 untimely passing on April 22, 1999, at the age of 18, and we join
1-4 them in mourning their tragic loss; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born January 25, 1981, in Ponce, Puerto Rico,
1-6 Mr. Irizarry was a senior at Bay City High School, from which he
1-7 was expected to graduate in May; an advanced placement student
1-8 ranked 11th in his class, he was a recipient of a Texas A&M
1-9 University Presidential Scholarship and planned to attend that
1-10 respected university in the fall; and
1-11 WHEREAS, This dynamic young man competed on the Bay City High
1-12 School football team for four years and on the track team for two
1-13 years; chosen "Class Favorite" his junior year and "Most Friendly"
1-14 his senior year, he also excelled in speech and drama for four
1-15 years and was active with Boy Interact for a year; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Mr. Irizarry was a valued member of the National
1-17 Honor Society and National Hispanic Recognition Program and was a
1-18 D.A.R.E. Role Model, River Watch Leader, Honor Scholar, National
1-19 Hispanic Merit Scholar, UIL aide, Senior Government Class Austin
1-20 Representative, and a Government-For-A-Day participant; and
1-21 WHEREAS, His myriad accomplishments include being a two-year
1-22 Voice of Democracy essay winner and a Daughters of the American
1-23 Revolution Good Citizen Award recipient; he also earned a host of
1-24 other accolades in speech and drama, bible reading, group
2-1 improvisation, prose and poetry reading, extemporaneous speaking,
2-2 and duet improvisation; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Juan Carlos Irizarry faced a future bright with
2-4 promise, and although his life was tragically cut short, his memory
2-5 will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of the many people
2-6 whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-8 Legislature hereby honor the memory of Juan Carlos Irizarry and
2-9 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-10 father, German Irizarry, Sr.; to his mother and stepfather, Gladys
2-11 and Raymond Johnson; to his grandparents, Americo Irizarry and
2-12 Amela Maldonado; to his sisters, Barbie Bickner, Maria Irizarry,
2-13 and Magda I. Irizarry; and to his many other relatives and friends;
2-14 and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-17 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-18 Juan Carlos Irizarry.
