No. 945 76R15912 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Since his election to the Texas House of 1-2 Representatives in 1986, the Honorable Dr., Representative, Mr., 1-3 future senator Henry "Hank" Cuellar has developed a well-deserved 1-4 reputation as an outstanding legislator and as a highly regarded 1-5 education advocate; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A five-term member of the House Appropriations 1-7 Committee, this esteemed gentleman serves as chairman of the 1-8 group's Subcommittee on Education, as vice chairman of the Higher 1-9 Education Committee, as a member of the Calendars Committee, and as 1-10 chairman of the House Research Organization Steering Committee; in 1-11 addition, he recently highlighted his own commitment to scholastic 1-12 achievement when he earned his doctorate in government from The 1-13 University of Texas at Austin; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Representative Cuellar's dedication to education is 1-15 well known: he received an associate degree in political science, 1-16 summa cum laude, from Laredo Community College in 1976, and 1-17 continued his education at Georgetown University, garnering a 1-18 bachelor's degree in foreign service, cum laude, before pursuing 1-19 and earning a law degree from UT-Austin's School of Law in 1981; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, During his legislative tenure, this commendable 1-22 individual has earned numerous awards and accolades in 1-23 acknowledgment of his efforts on behalf of his constituents and all 1-24 the citizens of Texas; the Texas Chamber of Commerce presented him 2-1 with its Legislative Leadership Award and its Distinguished Service 2-2 Award, and in 1994 he was named to Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in 2-3 America; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Representative Cuellar 2-5 receives much love and support from his wife, Imelda, and his 2-6 daughters, Christina, Alexandra, and Catherine Ann, and the 2-7 Cuellars have earned the respect and admiration of their fellow 2-8 Laredoans; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Representative Cuellar is committed to supporting 2-10 our law enforcement agencies in their fight against crime, and to 2-11 building a strong, diversified Texas economy; his dedication to 2-12 issues affecting children, the elderly, and the environment has 2-13 inspired countless Texans, and it is truly a privilege to recognize 2-14 him at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-16 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the Honorable Henry Cuellar for 2-17 his dedication to public service and congratulate him on his 2-18 receipt of his doctorate in government from The University of Texas 2-19 at Austin; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That all appropriations riders end with the 2-21 language "in Laredo," and that the state budget surplus should be 2-22 sent to Laredo; and, be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for Representative Cuellar as an expression of highest 2-25 regard by his colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives.
