R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
 1-2     in recognizing Dr. Gregg Cantrell of Hardin-Simmons University in
 1-3     Abilene, for his publications on Texas history indeed merit special
 1-4     legislative recognition; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Sweetwater, Dr. Cantrell graduated from
 1-6     Abilene Cooper High School and went on to earn a Ph.D. in history
 1-7     from Texas A&M University; he taught at Sam Houston State
 1-8     University in Huntsville for a number of years, and in 1998 he was
 1-9     named the Rupert N. Richardson Professor of History at
1-10     Hardin-Simmons University; and
1-11           WHEREAS, He has received fellowships from the National
1-12     Endowment for the Humanities and the William P.  Clements Center
1-13     for Southwest Studies, and his scholarship and enthusiasm make him
1-14     a popular speaker for community organizations and events; and
1-15           WHEREAS, He is widely published and his first book, Kenneth
1-16     and John B.  Rayner and the Limits of Southern Dissent, was honored
1-17     with the Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Award from the Texas State
1-18     Historical Association as the best book on Texas history published
1-19     in 1993; more recently, his article "The Partnership of Stephen F.
1-20     Austin and Joseph H.  Hawkins" won the association's H. Bailey
1-21     Carroll Award; and
1-22           WHEREAS,  His latest work is titled Stephen F. Austin,
1-23     Empresario of Texas, and will be the first full-length biography of
1-24     the Father of Texas in more than 70 years; due to be published in
 2-1     August by Yale University Press, the book promises to be a detailed
 2-2     account of a central figure in the events that led to the Texas
 2-3     Revolution, the establishment of the Lone Star Republic, and indeed
 2-4     the completion of America's westward expansion; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Dr. Cantrell's work offers a deep appreciation for
 2-6     Lone Star history and an understanding of early Texans to whom so
 2-7     much is owed; in light of his many years of scholarly dedication
 2-8     and focus, it is justly fitting to honor him at this time; now,
 2-9     therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-11     Legislature hereby commend Dr. Gregg Cantrell for his illuminating
2-12     publications on Texas history and extend to him warmest best wishes
2-13     for success and happiness in the future; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15     prepared for Dr.  Cantrell as an expression of highest regard by
2-16     the Texas House of Representatives.
