R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Ruben A. Corkill of San Antonio has made many 1-2 significant contributions to education in the State of Texas as an 1-3 administrator and teacher; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Corkill received his bachelor of science degree 1-5 in elementary education from the University of Houston and 1-6 continued his studies at Sam Houston State University, where he 1-7 attained his master's degree in administration; he later earned a 1-8 superintendent certificate at the University of Houston at Victoria 1-9 and a doctorate of education in educational administration from 1-10 Texas A&M University; and 1-11 WHEREAS, In 1971 he began his career as a classroom teacher 1-12 at Thompson Elementary School in Houston, but his considerable gift 1-13 for administration led him to take the position of principal at 1-14 Johnson Elementary School in 1975; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Corkill also served highly successful tenures as 1-16 principal for Seguin Elementary School in McAllen and 1-17 Skidmore-Tynan elementary and junior high schools in Skidmore 1-18 before becoming superintendent of Skidmore-Tynan ISD in 1990; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Extremely adept at handling the myriad 1-20 responsibilities of superintendent, Mr. Corkill also held the 1-21 demanding post of superintendent at Taft ISD before making his home 1-22 at Southside ISD in January 1996, and since that time area students 1-23 have been the welcome beneficiaries of his lifetime of knowledge 1-24 and experience in the field of education; and 2-1 WHEREAS, In his capacity as top administrator for Southside 2-2 ISD, he has implemented a number of highly successful initiatives, 2-3 including an alternative education program, and in recognition of 2-4 his remarkable accomplishments he was chosen to receive the San 2-5 Antonio Educational Partnership Community Service Award from San 2-6 Antonio College and the San Antonio Educational Partnership; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Truly a respected voice in his field, Mr. Corkill is 2-8 currently an adjunct instructor for The University of Texas at San 2-9 Antonio, maintains active membership in the Texas Association of 2-10 School Administrators, the American Association of School 2-11 Administrators, and the San Antonio Education Partnership Board of 2-12 Directors, and is an honorary life member of the PTA; and 2-13 WHEREAS, He has also worked to better his community through 2-14 his participation in the Taft Rotary Club, which he served as 2-15 president, the Mu Chi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi honor society, and 2-16 as a worshiper at the St. Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in San 2-17 Antonio; and 2-18 WHEREAS, For more than a quarter century, Ruben Corkill has 2-19 devoted his time and energy to broadening the avenue of educational 2-20 opportunity for young Texans and his notable efforts in this regard 2-21 are indeed worthy of special praise and recognition at this time; 2-22 now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-24 Legislature hereby honor Ruben A. Corkill for his many significant 2-25 achievements in the field of education and extend to him sincere 2-26 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for Mr. Corkill as an expression of high regard by the 3-2 Texas House of Representatives.
