R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Onion Creek Club is hosting The Philips
1-2 Invitational Honoring Harvey Penick tournament of the Ladies
1-3 Professional Golf Association (LPGA) on May 17-23, 1999, and this
1-4 outstanding occasion provides a fitting opportunity to recognize
1-5 this estimable country club and the LPGA; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Founded in 1974 by Masters champion Jimmy Demaret
1-7 and Texas amateur golf legend Jimmie Connolly, Onion Creek Club is
1-8 a spectacular and nationally acclaimed facility renowned as the
1-9 "Birthplace of the Senior PGA Tour"; and
1-10 WHEREAS, The first LPGA tournament in Austin since 1962, The
1-11 Philips Invitational Honoring Harvey Penick is sponsored by Philips
1-12 Electronics and is the only 1999 LPGA event in Texas; this
1-13 tournament honors the late Harvey Penick, one of golf's greatest
1-14 instructors and most humble legends, who taught almost half the
1-15 players in the LPGA Hall of Fame; and
1-16 WHEREAS, The LPGA is the leading women's sports association,
1-17 and this nonprofit organization is involved in all facets of the
1-18 game of golf; Texas has hosted 23 LPGA events through the years,
1-19 and many of the tour's brightest stars are from the Lone Star
1-20 State, including one of the LPGA's founders and charter members
1-21 Marilynn Smith, Hall of Fame members Kathy Whitworth, Sandra
1-22 Haynie, and Betsy Rawls, current players such as Cindy
1-23 Figg-Currier, Kelli Kuehne, and Wendy Ward, and Sports Hall of Fame
1-24 inductee Judy Rankin; and
2-1 WHEREAS, The Philips Invitational Honoring Harvey Penick will
2-2 certainly be an exciting and entertaining event for the Onion Creek
2-3 Club and the LPGA, and it is most appropriate to pay tribute to
2-4 both of these distinguished organizations at this time; now,
2-5 therefore, be it
2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-7 Legislature hereby honor all those associated with the Onion Creek
2-8 Club and the Ladies Professional Golf Association and extend to
2-9 them sincere best wishes for a successful tournament.
