R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
 1-2     the fine citizens of Alpine in the joyous celebration of Alpine Day
 1-3     at the State Capitol on May 21, 1999; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Located in the foothills of the Davis Mountains,
 1-5     Alpine traces its roots to the spring of 1882, when the first
 1-6     homestead was created by railroad workers and their families with a
 1-7     camp at the base of "A" Mountain; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, This city has evolved from its humble beginnings to
 1-9     become the "economic, cultural, and recreational center for
1-10     Trans-Pecos Texas," it is the home of Sul Ross State University,
1-11     and its importance as a trade center for ranchers is recognized
1-12     throughout Brewster County as it provides retail products and
1-13     serves as a shipping point for local goods; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Alpine has earned distinction as the "heart of the
1-15     Big Bend," due to its close proximity to this national treasure,
1-16     Big Bend National Park, and thousands of tourists venture to this
1-17     region to view the spectacular canyons and  partake in the
1-18     recreational activities available in this mountainous area; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The economic well-being of the city is led by the
1-20     Alpine Chamber of Commerce, which is celebrating its 92nd
1-21     anniversary this year; and events ranging from the establishment of
1-22     a plan for economic development to a visit by President Harry S.
1-23     Truman in 1948 have been influenced by this dynamic organization;
1-24     and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The people of Alpine are justifiably proud of their
 2-2     city, for this unique community and its exceptional citizens have
 2-3     played a significant role in Texas' development, and their many
 2-4     contributions to the Lone Star State are truly worthy of special
 2-5     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-7     Legislature hereby recognize May 21, 1999, as Alpine Day at the
 2-8     State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the fine citizens who
 2-9     have traveled to Austin to celebrate this significant event; and,
2-10     be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12     prepared for the people of Alpine as a commemoration of this
2-13     occasion and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
2-14     Representatives.
