R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to 1-2 congratulate the members of the first graduating class of the new 1-3 Montgomery High School for their myriad accomplishments; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Montgomery High School's Class of 1999 has led the 1-5 student body to remarkable levels of achievement during the 1-6 school's first year in its new building; 60 young men and women in 1-7 the 168-member senior class have been awarded more than $300,000 in 1-8 scholarship money, and seven students have received medals from the 1-9 State Board of Education for excellence in education; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Individual honors have abounded, with one student 1-11 having been named a National Merit Commended Scholar and one 1-12 selected as a National Merit Hispanic Scholar Finalist; one athlete 1-13 was chosen as a member of the academic all-state football team and 1-14 another made the academic all-state volleyball team; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The academic decathlon team placed second in 1-16 regional competition and earned an impressive 21 medals; 11 1-17 scholars advanced to Region 18-4A UIL academic competition in 1-18 informative speaking, persuasive speaking, news writing, editorial 1-19 writing, headline writing, prose, computer applications, current 1-20 events and issues, and number sense, and, of those young people, 1-21 two students advanced further to participate at the state level of 1-22 competition in prose and headline writing; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Musically gifted individuals have represented 1-24 Montgomery High School with distinction as well, as one musician 2-1 was selected for the UIL Region IX Philharmonic Orchestra, 13 2-2 students earned All-District Band honors, 23 won first-division 2-3 medals at regional competition, and three qualified for All-Region 2-4 Band; choir members also earned the respect of their peers, with 2-5 27 students earning superior Division I ratings and bringing home a 2-6 sweepstakes award for their school; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Among the 25 Key Clubs in the Texas/Oklahoma 2-8 district, the Montgomery High School club achieved a fourth-place 2-9 ranking, and its leader was named most outstanding club president; 2-10 15 students participated in a Houston area Model United Nations 2-11 conference, and the group placed a national representative on the 2-12 International Criminal Court; and 2-13 WHEREAS, These well-rounded young people have demonstrated 2-14 expertise in many fields; two students advanced to the state level 2-15 in DECA competition, one was chosen to attend the National Youth 2-16 Leadership Forum on Medicine, and 125 young men and women 2-17 participated in the Science and Sci-Tech Fair; in addition, artwork 2-18 created by students was displayed at Region VI; and 2-19 WHEREAS, The school's students placed first in trailer 2-20 competition at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and its FFA 2-21 horse judging team placed second in the halter division of the 2-22 Houston competition; and 2-23 WHEREAS, "Together We Can" is the motto of the school's 2-24 athletic department, whose members brought acclaim to the community 2-25 when the boys' golf team advanced to regional competition, the 2-26 girls' golf team placed seventh at the state level, and the boys' 2-27 doubles tennis team advanced to the state tournament; and 3-1 WHEREAS, The spirited members of the Bonnie Belles drill team 3-2 earned Super Sweepstakes trophies in competition, and its officers 3-3 claimed the highest awards for choreography; and 3-4 WHEREAS, Montgomery High School's Class of 1999 has set a 3-5 high standard of achievement for those that will follow in their 3-6 footsteps, and it is a privilege to honor these fine young people 3-7 at this time; now, therefore, be it 3-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 3-9 Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the senior class of 3-10 Montgomery High School for their commitment to excellence and 3-11 extend to them sincere best wishes for success and happiness in the 3-12 years to come; and, be it further 3-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-14 prepared for prominent display at Montgomery High School as an 3-15 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
