R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The year 1999 marks the 60th anniversary of the
 1-2     Junior League of  McAllen, Incorporated, and this auspicious
 1-3     milestone  is indeed worthy of special recognition; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, An educational and charitable association, the
 1-5     Junior League of McAllen consists of volunteer women who are
 1-6     committed to improving the quality of life for the youth of their
 1-7     community through effective action and leadership; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Formed January 18, 1938, as the Junior Service
 1-9     League of McAllen, the organization began its lengthy philanthropic
1-10     community service by establishing the Milk and Ice Fund, the
1-11     Community House for underprivileged girls, and the McAllen Child
1-12     Clinic, as well as starting the Plasma Bank, serving as Red Cross
1-13     nurse's aides, and sponsoring the membership meeting of the McAllen
1-14     Memorial Library Association; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The group later organized the Women's Auxiliary to
1-16     the McAllen Municipal Hospital and contributed to such worthy
1-17     initiatives as the McAllen Youth Center, Easter Seal Drive, Valley
1-18     United Fund Drive, and Hidalgo County Family counseling; one of the
1-19     league's greatest community contributions is helping found and
1-20     support the McAllen International Museum; and
1-21           WHEREAS, In 1985 the organization joined the Association of
1-22     Junior Leagues and changed its name to the Junior League of
1-23     McAllen; the league helped found the Youth Crisis Center and was
1-24     involved with the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, as well
 2-1     as providing parenting skills training, creating a Youth Services
 2-2     Directory, and beginning Dias Festivos, a holiday gift fair; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Currently the devoted women of the Junior League of
 2-4     McAllen donate their time and talents through efforts such as the
 2-5     Community Cultural Committee and the Community Involvement
 2-6     Committee; recently the organization voted to commit resources to
 2-7     the construction of a science playpark on the grounds of the
 2-8     McAllen International Museum, a project it hopes to complete in the
 2-9     fall of 1999; and
2-10           WHEREAS, The Junior League of McAllen continues to benefit
2-11     the community through its various projects and scholarships and
2-12     grants; proceeds from the sale of their popular cookbooks, the Dias
2-13     Festivos Marketplace, and the Sponsorship Program generate the
2-14     funding for their myriad community contributions; and
2-15           WHEREAS, The humanitarian efforts of the dedicated members of
2-16     the Junior League of McAllen are truly commendable, and the 60th
2-17     anniversary of this prestigious organization provides an ideal
2-18     opportunity to pay tribute to them for their many worthwhile
2-19     endeavors; now, therefore, be it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-21     Legislature hereby honor the 60th anniversary of the Junior League
2-22     of McAllen, Incorporated, and extend to its membership sincere best
2-23     wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-25     prepared for the Junior League of McAllen as an expression of high
2-26     regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
