                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Bernice Lester Rhem on April 28,
 1-2     1999, at the age of 66, has brought a great loss to the family and
 1-3     many friends of this esteemed Texan; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Rhem was born on March 28, 1933, in the Liberty
 1-5     Hill community to Emmitt and Edna Rhem; he was an outstanding
 1-6     student athlete in high school and attended Prairie View A&M
 1-7     University and Huston-Tillotson College; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, He served proudly in the U.S. Armed Forces and
 1-9     received the National Defense Service Award and the Good Conduct
1-10     Medal; following his release from service, Mr. Rhem moved to Austin
1-11     and accepted a job with the Driskill Hotel; and
1-12           WHEREAS, He was later employed with the Austin Club as night
1-13     manager, and his tenure there was marked with diligence,
1-14     professionalism, and ability; and
1-15           WHEREAS,  His marriage to Florence Henderson was blessed with
1-16     the birth of a daughter, Joselyn, and the bond between this loving
1-17     father and his cherished daughter remained a close one,
1-18     strengthened by many joyful memories and the addition of his
1-19     beloved grandson, Scott; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Mr. Rhem was a longtime member of the Springfield
1-21     Baptist Church, and though his presence will be deeply missed,
1-22     surely his spirit lives on in the hearts of the many people whose
1-23     lives he touched, and it is fitting to honor his memory at this
1-24     time; now, therefore, be it
 2-1           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-2     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Bernice Lester Rhem
 2-3     and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
 2-4     daughter, Joselyn Rhem; to his sisters, Ruby Ellison and her
 2-5     husband, Ned, Gladys Gipson and her husband, Otto, and Virtis Mae
 2-6     Blevens; to his brothers, Arnell Rhem and his wife, Bobbie, Edward
 2-7     Rhem and his wife, Helen, and Howard Rhem and his wife, Helen; to
 2-8     his grandson, Scott Rhem; and to his special friend, Karen
 2-9     Michalewicz; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-12     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-13     Bernice Lester Rhem.
