R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of Herbert Martin on May 15,
 1-2     1999, at the age of 90, has brought a great loss to the family and
 1-3     many friends of this beloved Port Arthur resident; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born in Abbeville, Louisiana, on April 4, 1909,
 1-5     Mr. Martin was a resident of Port Arthur for more than 70 years and
 1-6     for 39 of those years he was a dedicated employee of Gulf Oil;
 1-7     after retirement this public-spirited gentleman devoted his time
 1-8     and energy to the continued improvement of his community; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
1-10     Church and  Gulf Shore Masonic Lodge #256; his interest in politics
1-11     made him an active participant in government at both the local and
1-12     state levels and sparked his attendance at Port Arthur City Council
1-13     meetings; and
1-14           WHEREAS, This benevolent man worked to make his community a
1-15     better place to live, and he achieved his goal by participating in
1-16     civic and senior citizen endeavors and by developing a better
1-17     equipped Port Arthur Soup Kitchen and volunteering for Meals on
1-18     Wheels for eight years; and
1-19           WHEREAS, A well-respected resident of Port Arthur, Mr. Martin
1-20     was known for his willingness to help anyone in need, and his
1-21     ability and willingness to participate in community and church
1-22     functions contributed to the overall success of the programs he
1-23     helped; and
1-24           WHEREAS, This outstanding gentleman devoted much time to his
 2-1     family and his community, and though his dedication and wisdom will
 2-2     be greatly missed, his memory will long endure in the hearts and
 2-3     minds of those who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be
 2-4     it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Herbert Martin and
 2-7     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his son,
 2-8     Herbert Martin, Jr.; to his sister, Eran Frank; to his brother,
 2-9     Villery Martin; and to the many other relatives and friends of this
2-10     esteemed gentleman; and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-13     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-14     Herbert Martin.
