R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The belated birthday celebration of George Davis 1-2 Dixon provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the myriad 1-3 accomplishments of this distinguished gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Dixon was a five sport athlete 1-5 at Carter G. Woodson High School, graduating as the valedictorian 1-6 in 1954; he attained a bachelor of science degree from Prairie View 1-7 A&M University in 1958, where he was on the dean's list and twice 1-8 earned Southwest Athletic Conference cross-country championships; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1-11 1960, he received a master of science degree from Prairie View A&M 1-12 in 1965; he later pursued advanced studies at Texas Southern 1-13 University, Texas A&M University, and The University of Texas at 1-14 Austin; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Mr. Dixon began his teaching and coaching career at 1-16 Carver High School in Jewett, Texas; the coach of the year for 1-17 basketball and track in 1966, he led the school's track and field 1-18 team to four state runner-up finishes from 1962 to 1965 and to the 1-19 state championship in 1966, while guiding the basketball team to a 1-20 33-win season in 1964 and a state runner-up finish in 1966; and 1-21 WHEREAS, He then served as an instructor, dean of men, head 1-22 track coach, and assistant basketball coach at Paul Quinn College; 1-23 in addition to coaching nationally recognized athletes, Mr. Dixon 1-24 directed the track team to three invitation championships and the 2-1 conference title in 1970; and 2-2 WHEREAS, For 24 years he worked for the La Vega Independent 2-3 School District as a teacher, coach, assistant athletic director, 2-4 and athletic director for the girls' program before retiring in 2-5 1992; with the junior high school he garnered championships in 2-6 football, basketball, and track and with the high school he 2-7 consistently led the track and field teams to regional and state 2-8 meets; and 2-9 WHEREAS, During his career this dedicated coach and educator 2-10 has earned a host of accolades, including the Texas Girls 2-11 Association Track Career Victory Award for 1990 and the La Vega 2-12 Independent School District Master Teacher Award for 1991-1992 and 2-13 Education Excellence Award for 1987-1988 and 1991-1992; Mr. Dixon 2-14 was further honored by being named the La Vega High School teacher 2-15 of the year for 1981-1982, 1988-1989, and 1991-1992; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Throughout the years he has continued to draw 2-17 strength and inspiration from his wife, Julia Nell Dixon, and their 2-18 beloved children, Rochelle and Stephanie; and 2-19 WHEREAS, George Davis Dixon has long been a beloved community 2-20 figure whose many civic contributions have touched and enriched 2-21 countless lives, and it is most appropriate to pay tribute to him 2-22 at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-24 Legislature hereby honor George Davis Dixon for his lifetime of 2-25 achievements and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; 2-26 and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for Mr. Dixon as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-2 House of Representatives.
