No. 1218 76R15663 BE-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride 1-2 in honoring native Texan and well-known restaurateur George Garcia 1-3 Edwards of Corpus Christi; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards was born in Port Isabel in 1919; his 1-5 family moved to Corpus Christi while he was young, and he graduated 1-6 from Corpus Christi Senior High School in 1937; and 1-7 WHEREAS, He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 and earned the 1-8 rank of chief petty officer/gunner's mate; his service included a 1-9 tour of duty in the Pacific as well as five years in the reserves; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, On November 26, 1944, Mr. Edwards married Rebecca 1-12 Estrada in Portland, Oregon, and the two returned to Corpus Christi 1-13 to raise their family; they have been blessed with four children, 1-14 Maxine, Cynthia, George, Jr., and Sharon, and the joy and love they 1-15 share have increased with the years, especially with the addition 1-16 of 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards is active in a number of civic 1-18 organizations, including American Legion Post 364, Veterans of 1-19 Foreign Wars Post 2397, and the Del Mar Masonic Lodge and Scottish 1-20 Rite organizations, and he is a deacon at Primera Iglesia Bautista 1-21 and past president of the Brotherhood for Baptist Men; and 1-22 WHEREAS, From 1977 to 1992, Mr. Edwards was the owner of the 1-23 Texas Deep Pit Bar-B-Q, a Gulf Coast monument to the art of Lone 1-24 Star barbecue; today he helps operate 2 Georges Seafood with his 2-1 son, George, Jr., ensuring the continuity of the Edwards family 2-2 tradition; and 2-3 WHEREAS, On March 15, 1999, Mr. Edwards celebrated his 80th 2-4 birthday, and it is a great pleasure to recognize him at this time; 2-5 now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby commend George Garcia Edwards on his many years 2-8 of service to his country and to the community of Corpus Christi 2-9 and that he be extended warmest best wishes for the future; and, be 2-10 it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Mr. Edwards as an expression of high regard by the 2-13 Texas House of Representatives.
