                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, There is great uncertainty regarding the effect the
 1-2     century date transition will have on the State of Texas on January
 1-3     1, 2000; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, In an effort to reduce the negative impact of Y2K,
 1-5     the State of Texas will spend $256 million to remediate information
 1-6     systems and embedded systems, and hundreds of state employees have
 1-7     already devoted their time, energy, and expertise to protect Texans
 1-8     from being harmed by the century date transition; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The state agencies and universities of Texas have
1-10     received vital assistance and direction in their remediation
1-11     efforts from the following employees of the Department of
1-12     Information Resources, under the leadership of Carolyn Purcell,
1-13     executive director of the department, and Shannon Porterfield,
1-14     director of the department's Year 2000 Project Office:  Mel
1-15     Mireles, Nick Osborn, Tim Kennedy, Linda Mullins, Charlene
1-16     Strickland, Andrea Richeson, Carol Harwell, Ruth Hooks, Brett
1-17     Schurle, and Yvonne Montgomery; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Leadership has also been provided by Y2K
1-19     coordinators of key agencies and universities, including, but not
1-20     limited to, Sam Rogers of the Office of the Governor; Don Bailey
1-21     of the Office of the Attorney General; Mike DuBois of the General
1-22     Services Commission; Kaye Tucker of the Office of the Comptroller
1-23     of Public Accounts; Jan Justice of the Texas General Land Office;
1-24     Patricia A. Thomas of the Office of the Secretary of State; Britt
 2-1     Brookshire of the Texas Workforce Commission; Bill Grabo of the
 2-2     Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; Norma Irvine of the
 2-3     Teacher Retirement System of Texas; Wanda Allen of the Texas
 2-4     Department of Human Services; Sally Anderson of the Texas
 2-5     Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation; Gene Massey of
 2-6     the Employees Retirement System of Texas; George Schneider of the
 2-7     Texas Rehabilitation Commission; Mary Lauderdale of the Texas

2-13           WHEREAS, Other Y2K coordinators who are providing valuable
2-14     service include:  Jay Webster of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage
2-15     Commission; Mary Doran of the Public Utility Commission of Texas;
2-16     Ann Syptak of the Texas Department of Health; Bryan Shirley of the
2-17     Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse; Cindy Peck of the Texas
2-18     Health and Human Services Commission; Joan Owens of the Texas
2-19     Department of Protective and Regulatory Services; Jim Clark of the
2-20     Texas Department of Agriculture; Don Johnson of the Texas Natural
2-21     Resource Conservation Commission; Sharon Fitzpatrick of the Texas
2-22     Department of Transportation; Jon T. Newman of the Texas Department

 3-5           WHEREAS, At this time, it is indeed a great pleasure to
 3-6     commend these talented individuals for their exemplary efforts in
 3-7     behalf of state government; now, therefore, be it
 3-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 3-9     Legislature hereby acknowledge the tremendous contributions that
3-10     these and many unnamed state employees have provided in securing a
3-11     safer and more efficient state government on January 1, 2000; and,
3-12     be it further
3-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-14     prepared for the above-named employees as an expression of high
3-15     regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
