R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     acknowledge the many years of volunteer service that Mel and Norma
 1-3     Gabler have given to promoting excellence in education for young
 1-4     Texans; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Extensive parental involvement in our public
 1-6     education system demonstrates that families and other community
 1-7     members desire the finest education available today for all
 1-8     children in the Lone Star State, and this is the essence of Mel and
 1-9     Norma Gabler's crusade to improve textbooks in Texas public
1-10     schools; and
1-11           WHEREAS, A quality education for young people is vital to a
1-12     productive and prosperous future for Texas;  an exemplary education
1-13     should develop discerning, thoughtful young minds and instill
1-14     patriotic ideals and respect for democracy in students, as well as
1-15     teach them the valuable skills needed to ensure economic well-being
1-16     in today's free-market economy; these criteria are educational
1-17     qualities Mr. and Mrs. Gabler strive to achieve in our schools; and
1-18           WHEREAS, For 38 years the Gablers have read and critiqued
1-19     textbooks for primary and secondary schools; a dedicated couple,
1-20     their contributions have alerted the state to numerous errors,
1-21     omissions, and contradictions in textbooks, and they have further
1-22     worked to ensure that the information contained in our children's
1-23     textbooks will reflect the values held sacred by our communities;
1-24     and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Their service to Texas is vital to the judicious
 2-2     procurement of educational texts for children across the nation as
 2-3     well; because Texas is one of the largest textbook buyers for high
 2-4     school and lower-level texts, the state's choice of curriculum and
 2-5     textbooks sets a precedent for other states' book purchases, and
 2-6     this has a profound effect on the intellectual development of young
 2-7     minds both in our state and across the nation; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The state is truly fortunate to have Mel and Norma
 2-9     Gabler among its citizens, for their efforts to promote educational
2-10     excellence help to ensure a brighter future for countless young
2-11     people; now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-13     Legislature hereby commend Mel and Norma Gabler for their devoted
2-14     service to public education in the State of Texas; and, be it
2-15     further
2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17     prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Gabler as an expression of high regard by
2-18     the Texas House of Representatives.
