R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi's Sam Kane has earned the respect and 1-2 admiration of his fellow citizens as a renowned businessman and an 1-3 active community leader, and he is indeed worthy of special 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born in Spisske Podhradie, Czechoslovakia, Mr. Kane 1-6 graduated from Rabbinical College in 1939 and served as a member of 1-7 the underground resistance movement in Czechoslovakia against the 1-8 German government during World War II; his future wife, Aranka 1-9 Feldbrand, was imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp as 1-10 the Allied and Axis powers battled, yet their love prevailed and 1-11 the couple were married on January 15, 1946, at the conclusion of 1-12 the war; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Kane, his wife, and their son, Jerry, arrived in 1-14 Corpus Christi in 1948 as one of the few Jewish families allowed to 1-15 emigrate to the U.S. after World War II; the Kanes' family has 1-16 since grown to include son Harold Ira and daughter Esther Barbara, 1-17 and all three children have been a source of great pride to their 1-18 parents and relatives; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Without a penny to his name, Mr. Kane found work in 1-20 Corpus Christi as a plumber's assistant; he later began his career 1-21 in the meat business at a leased counter in a local grocery store; 1-22 though he had no previous experience or training, his business 1-23 flourished and has since evolved into Sam Kane Beef Processors, one 1-24 of three surviving independent grain fed meat-packing companies in 2-1 the United States today and one of the country's largest 2-2 meat-packing companies, with more than 650 workers; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Since gaining U.S. citizenship in 1953, he has 2-4 dedicated himself to being a proud and productive American; this 2-5 patriotic gentleman believes in the ideals of this country and 2-6 understands the freedoms we hold dear; he has truly lived the 2-7 American Dream while devoting his time, energy, and financial 2-8 support to a variety of civic and philanthropic endeavors, and he 2-9 has instilled these important values in his family, as evidenced by 2-10 his son, Jerry, who is an 18-year member and the current chairman 2-11 of the Texas Rehabilitation Commission; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Mr. Kane was the chairman of the National Jewish 2-13 Coalition for the State of Texas for the Reagan-Bush Election 2-14 Committee in 1980 and 1984; he has served in numerous leadership 2-15 positions, including president of B'nai Israel Synagogue and 2-16 director of First City Bank of Corpus Christi, and has enjoyed 2-17 membership on the National Jewish Coalition's executive board, the 2-18 State of Texas 2000 Commission, and the board of directors of the 2-19 Texas Council on Economic Education; and 2-20 WHEREAS, This fine man's service to his community has earned 2-21 him a number of well-deserved accolades; he received the Israel 2-22 Service Award in 1966, the State of Israel's Koach Award in 1976, 2-23 and the Prime Minister of Israel Peace Medal in 1980, and he was 2-24 named Outstanding Jewish Citizen of Corpus Christi in 1969; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Sam Kane has devoted his life to providing for his 2-26 family, upholding his faith, and serving his fellow citizens, and 2-27 in light of his tremendous dedication to these worthy ideals, it is 3-1 justly fitting that he be recognized at this time; now, therefore, 3-2 be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 3-4 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Sam Kane for his many 3-5 contributions to the citizens of Corpus Christi and the Lone Star 3-6 State and honor him for his myriad good deeds and achievements; 3-7 and, be it further 3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-9 prepared for Mr. Kane as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-10 House of Representatives.
