R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Forest Festival is celebrating its 16th
1-2 anniversary in Lufkin, Texas, and the event's goal is to highlight
1-3 the positive impact of the forest industry on the Lone Star State;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, The forest industry comprises one of the state's
1-6 largest industrial sectors in terms of job creation and economic
1-7 impact, with thousands of Texans employed by wood-based
1-8 manufacturers; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Lufkin is the center of the forest industry in
1-10 Texas; the city is home to the offices of the National Forests in
1-11 Texas and the Texas Forest Service, and is also the headquarters of
1-12 the Texas Forestry Association and the nationally renowned Texas
1-13 Forestry Museum; and
1-14 WHEREAS, The heritage of the forestry profession in Lufkin is
1-15 linked with such giants in the lumber industry as Southland Paper
1-16 (now Donahue Corporation), the first company to produce newsprint
1-17 in the South, Louisiana-Pacific, Owens-Illinois, Champion
1-18 International, and Temple-Inland, which maintains its national
1-19 headquarters in Diboll, Texas; and
1-20 WHEREAS, Ideally situated for its purpose, the Texas Forest
1-21 Festival is held between two national forests, the Angelina
1-22 National Forest and the Davy Crockett National Forest; and
1-23 WHEREAS, The Texas Forest Festival is an eagerly anticipated
1-24 event each year in deep East Texas, and it consistently offers a
2-1 forum for emphasizing the impact of the forestry industry on the
2-2 region and the entire State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
2-3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-4 Legislature hereby recognize the Texas Forest Festival as the
2-5 Official State Forest Festival and extend to the event's organizers
2-6 and participants, and all those who work in the timber industry,
2-7 sincere best wishes for continued success with this worthy
2-8 endeavor.
