R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Everett Leonard Bishop on May 25,
1-2 1999, at the age of 80, has brought a great loss to the many
1-3 friends and relatives of this highly decorated Army veteran; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Bishop served with
1-5 distinction as a member of the United States Army 45th Infantry
1-6 Division in the European Theater from 1941 to 1946 and in Korea
1-7 from 1950 to 1952; commissioned on the battlefield, he was promoted
1-8 from private to first lieutenant and served as a rifleman and as an
1-9 infantry unit commander; and
1-10 WHEREAS, This dedicated soldier was wounded twice, earning
1-11 two Purple Hearts, and he was also awarded the Combat Infantry
1-12 Badge, the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, a silver
1-13 battle star and three bronze battle stars; his additional military
1-14 accolades included the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense
1-15 Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and many more; and
1-16 WHEREAS, After retiring to Huntsville, Mr. Bishop,
1-17 affectionately known as "Len" to his friends, devoted his time and
1-18 energy to teaching school children about the realities of war and
1-19 the value of freedom, and he shared stories with them about his
1-20 experiences as a soldier; and
1-21 WHEREAS, He was a charter member of the HEARTS (Helping Each
1-22 American Remember Through Serving) organization, and during the
1-23 past five years he had reached more than 3,000 children with his
1-24 message; his unique volunteer work in schools was very close to his
2-1 heart and the children responded positively to his gentle nature
2-2 and compelling talks; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Bishop and his wife of 52 years, Reva, enjoyed a
2-4 warm and happy marriage that was blessed with a son and daughter
2-5 and two grandchildren; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Everett Leonard Bishop had a profound impact on the
2-7 lives of countless people, and he will surely be remembered with
2-8 great affection and admiration for many years to come; now,
2-9 therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representative of the 76th Texas
2-11 Legislature hereby honor the memory of Everett Leonard "Len" Bishop
2-12 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-13 wife, Reva Bishop; to his children, Larry Bishop and Beverly
2-14 Lindsey; to his grandchildren; and to the many other friends and
2-15 relatives of this remarkable man; and, be it further
2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-17 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-18 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-19 Everett Leonard Bishop.
