No. 1347 76R17692 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Museum of the Big Bend is hosting the summer 1-2 exhibit "Baseball: The National Pastime and the Big Bend," and 1-3 this auspicious occasion provides a fitting opportunity to 1-4 recognize the storied baseball history of Alpine, Texas, and the 1-5 city's "Mr. Baseball," Herbert L. Kokernot, Jr.; and 1-6 WHEREAS, This exhibit will feature the famed Alpine Cowboys, 1-7 the team sponsored by Mr. Kokernot, and will boast a wide variety 1-8 of artifacts and memorabilia, including uniforms, programs, and 1-9 photographs, as well as rarely seen footage of the Cowboys and 1-10 exhibition games played at Kokernot Field; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The smallest town in the United States ever to field 1-12 a semiprofessional baseball team, Alpine has also been the home to 1-13 the Alpine Fightin' Bucks, Sul Ross Lobos, Little League, 1-14 Internationals, and numerous other area teams; and 1-15 WHEREAS, In conjunction with the exhibit, a reunion of the 1-16 Alpine Cowboys and many other former local ballplayers will be held 1-17 on June 25-27, 1999, an outstanding occasion that also includes an 1-18 old-timers game on June 26; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The exhibit, which will be held June 5 through 1-20 September 15, 1999, at the Museum of the Big Bend, is truly an 1-21 appropriate way to pay tribute to the history-rich baseball town of 1-22 Alpine and its "Mr. Baseball," Herbert L. Kokernot, Jr.; now, 1-23 therefore, be it 1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-1 Legislature hereby commemorate the exhibit "Baseball: The National 2-2 Pastime and the Big Bend" to be held at the Museum of the Big Bend 2-3 in Alpine and recognize June 25, 1999, as Herbert L. Kokernot, Jr., 2-4 Day.
