                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to
 1-2     congratulate Spanish teacher Maria Garcia-Rameau of Houston on her
 1-3     receipt of a 1999 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award by
 1-4     the Texas Council for the Humanities; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Created a decade ago, the award acknowledges
 1-6     exemplary contributions in teaching, curriculum development, and
 1-7     extracurricular programs by teachers of history, literature,
 1-8     foreign languages, government, social studies, and related fields
 1-9     in elementary, middle, and high schools; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Mrs. Garcia-Rameau will receive a $1,000 stipend
1-11     toward her professional development and her school will be awarded
1-12     $1,000 for the purchase of humanities instructional materials or
1-13     the enhancement of humanities courses and programs; and
1-14           WHEREAS, She is a 35-year veteran of the Houston Independent
1-15     School District and has devoted the last 24 years to Scarborough
1-16     High School, where she teaches Spanish and chairs the foreign
1-17     language department; and
1-18           WHEREAS, A native of La Habana, Cuba, Mrs. Garcia-Rameau
1-19     earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of
1-20     Villanueva in La Habana; in 1961 she moved to the United States and
1-21     later received a bachelor's degree in Spanish and history and a
1-22     master's degree in Spanish literature and linguistics from the
1-23     University of Houston; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Among her many well-deserved accolades,
 2-1     Mrs. Garcia-Rameau received the 1996 Excellence and Dedication
 2-2     Award from the Brazos Chapter of the American Association of
 2-3     Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese; she was also named the Texas
 2-4     Foreign Language Association 1991 Spanish Teacher of the Year and
 2-5     was first runner-up for Teacher of the Year for the Houston ISD in
 2-6     1991; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, A recognized authority in her field,
 2-8     Mrs. Garcia-Rameau has been invited to make a presentation at a
 2-9     conference this fall for the American Council of Teachers of
2-10     Foreign Language; she is a member of the Houston Area Teachers of
2-11     Foreign Language, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish
2-12     and Portuguese, and the Southwest Conference of Language Teachers;
2-13     and
2-14           WHEREAS, She is married to Dr. Eduardo Garcia-Rameau and
2-15     takes great pride in their three children and four grandchildren;
2-16     two of their children have followed in their mother's footsteps to
2-17     become teachers; and
2-18           WHEREAS, Maria Garcia-Rameau exemplifies the highest
2-19     standards of the teaching profession, and she is indeed worthy of
2-20     special recognition for her commitment to educational excellence;
2-21     now, therefore, be it
2-22           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-23     Legislature hereby congratulate Maria Garcia-Rameau on her receipt
2-24     of a 1999 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award and extend
2-25     to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness;
2-26     and, be it further
2-27           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-1     prepared for Mrs. Garcia-Rameau as an expression of high regard by
 3-2     the Texas House of Representatives.
