No. 1360 76R18156 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Memorial Day 1999 presents an appropriate 1-2 opportunity to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of 1-3 the sons of the late Maria and Teodoro Hernandez of San Antonio, 1-4 for their record of achievement as military men and patriotic 1-5 Americans is indeed worthy of special recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Hernandez emigrated from Mexico to 1-7 Texas with their respective families during the early years of the 1-8 Mexican Revolution, settling in Geronimo and scratching out a hard 1-9 existence as field workers; the young couple were married in San 1-10 Marcos in 1920, moved to Kerrville in 1925, and eventually settled 1-11 in San Antonio in 1930, where they raised a large and loving 1-12 family; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The couple's family included Gilbert Hernandez, 1-14 their nephew Robert Sandoval, the late Abel Hernandez, Arthur 1-15 Hernandez, Mario Hernandez, Armando Hernandez, Emilio Hernandez, 1-16 Edward "Walo" Hernandez, and Samuel "Tony" Hernandez, each of whom 1-17 served in the army, navy, or naval reserve; their childhoods were 1-18 characterized by the same type of living that their parents knew, 1-19 yet the armed forces provided them with an opportunity to serve 1-20 their fellow citizens and to improve their circumstances; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Gilbert, Robert, Abel, Arthur, and Mario all became 1-22 combat veterans of World War II, while the remaining brothers 1-23 continued the family's tradition of service during the years of the 1-24 Cold War; each of these dedicated men have enjoyed success as civil 2-1 service employees since their retirements from the military, 2-2 establishing themselves as valued and respected members of their 2-3 respective communities; and 2-4 WHEREAS, These exemplary gentlemen have faithfully followed 2-5 the credo of the Catholic War Veterans by serving their God, their 2-6 country, and their family, and as we celebrate the contributions 2-7 and sacrifices of the many men and women who have proudly dedicated 2-8 themselves to our armed forces, it is an honor to extend special 2-9 recognition to these esteemed Texas veterans; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-11 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the family of Maria and Teodoro 2-12 Hernandez and commend them for their patriotic contributions to the 2-13 United States armed forces; and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for these dedicated individuals as an expression of 2-16 highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
