No. 432 By: Bernsen 1-8 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-9 AN ACT 1-10 relating to the designation of an initial or a renewal registration 1-11 period by the owner of a motor vehicle or a trailer. 1-12 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-13 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, 1-14 is amended by adding Section 502.1585 to read as follows: 1-15 Sec. 502.1585. DESIGNATION OF REGISTRATION PERIOD BY OWNER. 1-16 (a) This section applies only to a person who owns more than one 1-17 motor vehicle or trailer that is subject to registration under this 1-18 chapter. 1-19 (b) Notwithstanding Section 502.158, the owner of a motor 1-20 vehicle or a trailer may designate an initial or a renewal 1-21 registration period for that vehicle so that the registration 1-22 period for the vehicle or trailer expires on the same date as the 1-23 registration period for another vehicle or trailer previously 1-24 registered by that owner. 1-25 (c) A registration period designated under this section must 1-26 begin on the first day of a calendar month and end on the last day 1-27 of a calendar month and may not be for less than 12 months. 1-28 (d) The registration fee for a registration period 1-29 designated under this section is computed at a rate of one-twelfth 1-30 the annual registration fee multiplied by the number of months in 1-31 the designated registration period. 1-32 (e) The department shall issue an applicant for registration 1-33 who pays registration fees for a designated period under this 1-34 section a registration receipt and registration insignia that are 1-35 valid until the expiration of the designated period. 1-36 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1999. 1-37 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the 1-38 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-39 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-40 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-41 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended. 1-42 * * * * *
